N.B. This walkthrough is based on the Windows client for OpenVPN, but the procedure is very similar for other platforms. You should ensure you are using version 2.3 or later.
Firstly, the client software should be installed. Links are present on the NetManager's administration pages to the relevant versions. These are also reproduced below:

Download the software and run the installer. Click on Next to go through all the steps accepting the defaults:
During the process, you may see a warning about software not passing Windows Logo testing. Click on "Continue Anyway":
